Six new Des Lee Fine Arts Interns have begun their work with Des Lee Fine Arts Collaborative partner agencies. These undergraduate students are working with the Directors of Education of these agencies, gaining valuable ‘real world’ experience and, at the same time, serving these agencies with their good work and assistance.

Jazz St. Louis is sponsoring two interns. Ms. Malena Smith and Mr. Ethan Saake are working with Mr. Phil Dunlap and Mr. Andy Ament in a variety of activites, including assisting with the Jazz Bistro Education Center and the Jazz U. program.

Ms. Rachel Morgan is working with the Mathews Dickey Boys and Girls Club and is working with Ms. Lu Juan Williams in providing piano instruction to several young students.

Ms. Maria Ellis began as a Des Lee Intern, but is now employed by the St. Louis Children’s Choir as their Director of Community Outreach.  As part of her many responsibilities in this role, she will be the Chair of the Des Lee Middle School Festival Choir. Mr. Dan Mayo is one of Ms. Ellis’ mentors at the Children’s Choir.

Mr. Marvin Lewis spent the summer working with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, getting to know more about the inner-workings of their Education Department.

We are so pleased to make this wonderful new connection with UMSL music major undergraduates and our fine St. Louis area arts partners. If you would like to know more about the program, or are perhaps interested in sponsoring an intern with your own situation, please contact the Des Lee Fine Arts Education Director, Dr. Michael Smith. smithmv@umsl.edu.
