Join Eimear Arkins for an exploration into Irish music. This three week series will give you an overview of some of the lesser know (but still very popular!) Irish tune types. Bring your instrument and – if it helps you learn – a recording device (cellphone) or a notebook and pencil.
Marches, barndances, hornpipes, flings, highlands, strathspeys… the list goes on! There are lots of different tunes in the Irish repertoire that are in 4/4 time besides reels, the most common tune type. In this series, we will look at three of these types of tunes: marches, barndances and hornpipes. We will learn one of these tune types in each class and discuss the distinctive rhythm that each one has despite sharing the same time signature.
